DTF vs Screen Printing vs Embroidery: Which Is Right for Your Shirts?

Plain-language guide from a Pensacola print shop: when DTF, screen printing or embroidery is the better choice for t-shirts, hoodies, hats and uniforms, by quantity, design and fabric.

Three ways to put a design on a shirt

Every custom apparel order comes down to the same choice, and the right answer is not always the one people expect. Here is how we decide at Gator Grafix, where we run all three methods under one roof at 8447 Pensacola Blvd.

DTF (direct-to-film) printing

The design is printed in full color onto a film, coated with a heat-activated adhesive powder, then pressed onto the garment. Best for: small runs, one-offs, designs with many colors, gradients or photos, and polyester or performance fabrics. Strengths: no minimum, no setup fee, unlimited colors, works on nearly any fabric and color, consistent from the first shirt to the hundredth. Trade-offs: large solid-color areas feel heavier than a screen print, and per-piece cost does not fall as steeply on very large runs. Gator Grafix was the first shop in the area with DTF, and it is what we reach for on most orders under a few dozen pieces.

Screen printing

Ink is pushed through a stencil (a screen) onto the fabric, one screen per color, then cured with heat. Best for: larger runs of one design with a few solid colors: team shirts, event shirts, company tees, fundraisers. Strengths: the softest hand on cotton, vivid solid colors, the lowest per-piece cost once you are past a couple of dozen, proven durability. Trade-offs: setup cost per color, so a six-color design on twelve shirts is expensive; gradients and photos are hard; and ink can migrate on some polyesters.

Embroidery

The design is stitched into the fabric with thread. Best for: polos, hats, jackets, work shirts, uniforms and anything that needs to look professional for years. Strengths: the most durable and the most premium look; it does not fade, crack or peel. Trade-offs: a one-time digitizing charge for the design, a limit on fine detail and tiny text, and small embroidered logos are the norm (a full-back design is rarely practical). Thread colors are matched to your brand.

Quick decision guide

What affects the price

Quantity, number of colors (screen printing only), number of print locations (front, back, sleeve), garment choice and turnaround. Design is included with every order. Blank garments range from economy tees to premium brands; we stock samples at the shop so you can feel the difference before you decide.

Artwork we need

A vector logo (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) is ideal for screen printing and embroidery. For DTF, a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background prints beautifully. If all you have is a photo of an old shirt or a business card, our designers can recreate the artwork.
